1983 Prisoner Rights Cases Mediation Program Discussion
Judge Roberts is hosting a small meeting with interested parties to discuss a program she is piloting by which she might establish an early mediation program for section 1983 prisoner rights cases, principally those involving disputes over medical care. There is a program in Nevada with a 30% resolution rate and Judge Roberts is reaching out to various organizations to enlist support in creating a group of lawyers to act as mediators. The United States District Court for Eastern Michigan and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law have created a Pro Se Legal Assistance Clinic to provide legal advice to low-income citizens who seek to represent themselves in federal civil lawsuits. The program is aimed at helping those who have legitimate claims but who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
