Fight Unjust Detention of Immigrants: Training for Pro Bono Attorneys

Join the ACLU of Michigan, Federal Bar Association Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, and Michigan chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association for a one-day training for attorneys interested in helping persons be released from immigration detention, both pre- and post-removal order. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Overview of immigration custody and detention processes
  • Arguments to challenge detention
  • Getting into federal court
  • Strategies for relief for persons detained six months or longer after being ordered removed
The training sessions will be led by Michael Tan of the ACLU’s Immigration Rights Project and Russell Abrutyn, a nationally-recognized attorney specializing in immigration law.
We hope that after taking this training, you will assist us by accepting a pro bono case for a detained immigrant. We will provide mentorship
Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Michael Tan is a Staff Attorney at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project (IRP). His practice includes litigation and advocacy relating to immigration detention, immigrants’ access to education, and the rights of undocumented young people. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Yale Law School and also holds a Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature from New York University. After law school, Michael clerked for the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and worked at IRP as Skadden Fellow and a Liman Public Interest Fellow. In 2014, he was awarded a California Lawyer of the Year Award in Immigration Law for his work on Rodriguez v. Robbins, a class action lawsuit challenging the prolonged detention of immigrants without bond hearings. Michael was awarded a Best Lawyers Under 40 Award by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association in 2016, and was also named a Best LGBT Lawyer Under the Age of 40 by the National LGBT Bar Association in 2017.

Rusell Abrutyn is a nationally-recognized immigration law attorney. He handles both complex and routine immigration matters, including family, employment, naturalization, immigrant, nonimmigrant, waiver, asylum, removal defense, appellate, and litigation matters. He graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School in 1999, where he worked on the Michigan Journal of Race and Law. After more than 15 years of working at well-respected immigration law firms in Washington and Michigan states, he opened his own law firm to better assist his clients in achieving their immigration dreams.
