Law Day
Law Day
Consistent with the vision of former Chief Judge Bernard A. Friedman, who initiated the program in order to make the courts more accessible to the public, the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse welcomes visitors from the downtown business community and Detroit-area high schools on Law Day. The Committee works each year to obtain funding and if found, assist high schools with transportation expenses when needed.
The program includes displays by various federal agencies, demonstrations, visits from bomb-sniffing dogs, topical panel discussions related to the theme, and tours of the courthouse. Judges make themselves available to talk with students and members of the public who come in to visit.
Practicing attorneys are available for the very popular “Ask a Lawyer” booths, to offer general advice to pro se litigants and others on legal matters.
Volunteer lawyers are always needed for all tasks — and particularly for the “Ask the Lawyer” part of Law Day.
If you are interested in participating in any aspect of Law Day, please contact one of the co-chairs:
